ROMOR C-ROM – Compact Recoverable Ocean Mooring
The ROMOR C-ROM (Compact Recoverable Ocean Mooring) is an oceanographic subsurface mooring design that offers a reliable, compact solution to mooring and recovering oceanographic instrumentation. The design offers a subsurface flotation collar that provides approximately 80 lbf positive buoyancy for use in a seawater environment for depths starting at 750m, progressing to full ocean. The flotation collars are designed to provide erection for the mooring design, and for future recovery of the subsurface mooring from the ocean floor. Essentially, the subsurface floatation collar fits around the acoustic release assembly and any oceanographic instrument that can accommodate the dimensions of the proposed design. The C-ROM Plus, a slightly larger version of the standard C-ROM package is available and provides an increased payload capability of 105 lbf positive buoyancy.

The C-ROM and C-ROM Plus provide a positive buoyancy of approximately 80 lbf and 105 lbf when submerged in seawater, and are depth rated to 500m. The flotation consists of a polyethylene shell and filled with syntactic foam, which makes it able to function without any degradation or deformation within the temperature range of -20°C [-40°F] to +40°C [+100°F].
As an option for both the C-ROM and C-ROM Plus packages, the C-ROM Roto Drum is a device which can be fitted to the C-ROM (syntactic flotation) to enable recovery of the mooring anchor once the mooring has been released and surfaced. The design resembles a cable reel and stores the recovery rope in the same fashion rope and cable manufactures supply their product – on a spool. This is the most efficient means of storing rope to decrease the likely hood of entanglement and provide a large capacity. This method is a proven concept in the oceanographic industry for deploying rope from the seafloor.
 
The Roto Drum can be installed on the C-ROM once all instrumentation is in place and the package is fully assembled. The rope can be pre-loaded to make field installation easy and save time when turning equipment around in the field. The Roto Drum is a rotational molded medium density polyethylene providing rigidity to the spool while still being light weight. It is loaded with a 5/16 inch, high strength, floating, 12 strand rope or a rope specified by the customer, and is capable of supporting lengths of up to 500m and in 100m increments.
